Understanding the processing tools
- When you're actually doing the processing of your enlargement, you need to be able to see what you're doing, so an important part of your darkroom toolkit is going to be a safelight. There's a couple of different kinds of safelights. You're all probably familiar with the red safelight that you see so often in film. This is what's called a Thomas Duplex Super Safelight, and it actually works with a sodium vapor bulb that casts a yellow light. It has adjustable baffles that allow you to increase or decrease the intensity of the light depending on what you need for the processing. At it's dimmest it can actually be used for color processing. For our work, we're going to be able to have a much brighter darkroom with this light than we would with a typical red safelight. What you're doing is a chemical process. Obviously, that's going to require chemistry. It's really a simple three part process at it's most basic level.
