Pro tip: Restrictions lead to creativity

Pro tip restrictions lead to creativity. Sounds crazy, absolutely true. Here's what I mean. Say that I told you to take your camera and go out and make twelve portraits of anybody you want, doing anything, at anytime. Go. See you in two hours. That's going to freak you out a little bit. Conversely, say I gave you your camera and said, I need you to go make twelve portraits of twelve people with a 50 millimeter lens, and I need you to make everyone horizontal. Immediately, that gives a structure to what you're doing, it gives you boundary, it gives you restrictions, and the creativity comes when you have to work within those boundaries. So, to spark creativity, what I will often do, even if I don't have one, is give myself a mini photo assignment when I'm traveling. For instance, I might be in London and I might be shooting just general London stuff, but my assignment might be to shoot a specific type of people when I see them, like tourists, like weird tourists, or something…
