A convertible tripod
- You've heard me talk about lightweight tripods. I got one here. I modified this and put on a better head. I'm a big fan of really right stuff and using an L bracket or an Arca-Swiss-type plate, but it's not just a tripod. This particular one can actually convert. You see, the center column removes and you can detach this bottom leg and convert it into a monopod. This really comes in handy. You see, when you're shooting off of a boat, a tripod doesn't really matter. In fact, the tripod is really hard to spread the legs out and get great stability. So by simplifying the device to a monopod, you've got a great, solid platform. This allowed me to easily brace it against the surface. I could lean into the edge of the boat or I could jam the tripod leg, or in this case, the monopod single leg, into a corner. This gave me more stability. So now as the boat is vibrating and moving, the camera doesn't move as much side to side, nor can it move up and down. This dramatically cuts down on any…
