How to know when an image should be color vs. black and white

- In the digital realm I think many of us forget about the power and beauty of black and white. Our cameras all shoot color raw files and the images show up on the review screen in color unless you pick monochrome so that it will come up in black and white in the review screen, something I do when I'm shooting black and white or thinking black and white, yet choosing black and white can be more than just dealing with an image that you can't get the color right for. So look at this picture. It's obviously a color image, and I think it's kind of pretty. It's scattered, it's just a reflection, lots of color. Totally color image, the red and blue and paint spattered. I wouldn't really think of converting this to black and white, it's color. Another color image. I think part of what makes this, for me, a color image is it's really just about the blue, that's really the only color in there. Or this image, well maybe it's got some political ramifications but it really is about the red, and I…
