Welcome

- Hi, I'm Erin Manning, and welcome to Up and Running with light and lighting. The purpose of this course is to help you understand the basics of working with man-made artificial light, as opposed to natural light from the sun. In the world of photography, artificial light is also known as studio light. So, I'll use these two terms interchangeably. If you've ever felt intimidated by those professional-looking lighting setups, or wondered how to gain control of your flash, or would just like to move more confidently towards enhancing your images using artificial light, this is a good place to begin. I'll start by introducing you to the two basic types of artificial light, and show you how to set up and use a continuous lighting kit with stands and softboxes. Next, I'll demonstrate how to identify, and control the quality and direction of light, and how to use it to create a mood, and control your lighting scenarios. We'll also cover how to work with shadows and highlights to further enhance your images. In addition, I'll go over the fundamentals for setting up and using an external speedlight flash. From using the flash on-camera for filling in shadows, and softening the light, to a slightly more advanced off-camera lighting configuration. You'll discover some new techniques, and feel more confident about using a flash. I'm really excited to show you just how easy it can be to capture great photos using studio light. So, let's get started.
