Here we are at Brooks Institute, the photography school where I teach. In this chapter, we are going to head on into the classroom and view a few slideshows of photographs in order to discuss some important ideas and concepts that we can consider as we're striving to make portraits that are full of story, depth, and meaning. Let's go ahead and head on into the classroom. One of the reasons why I wanted to head into a classroom was to take a few minutes to look at some photographs and to talk about some ideas and concepts that can be helpful when you're trying to create portraits of people that tell stories. In this first movie we are going to focus in on making the connection, the connection between the subject and the photographer. I want to show you a set of pictures that are all captured in a similar way. In all of these pictures, I'm using either a 50 or 85 mm focal length lens. Now why does that matter?
