Introduction to posed street photography

(upbeat piano music) - Hi, everybody. My name is Steve Simon, and welcome to the Street Photography Posed Portrait Course over here in New York City. And it's gonna be an amazing time. (laughing) I'm sure when you're a kid, your mother said, "Hey, don't talk to strangers." Well, I'm gonna encourage you to do just the opposite. Hey, can I ask you a question? - [Man In Brown Jacket] Sure. - Would you mind if I took a shot of you? When you engage people who you don't know, often not only will you end up with a great photograph, but you're gonna end up with kind of a cool life experience as well. I'm looking for interesting people. People that I'm responding to. Maybe it's their face. Maybe it's something they're wearing. Maybe they remind me of someone that I know. We're gonna go to a variety of different locations. So you're gonna see kind of how I do it. Excuse me, sir, I know you're working. Can I take his picture? - Picture, yeah no problem. - [Steve] Yeah, do you mind if I take your picture? - Okay, okay. - You come look at me. And then ultimately you're gonna make it your own. Beautiful. It's a bit of a numbers game. Let me get one more for the road, and make sure I get a good one. But the more you do this, the better your work's gonna get, the better you're gonna get at it. I saw the paints, and I thought it would be kind of interesting, actually with that backdrop. Do you have a minute? Don't even look at me. Just pretend I'm not here. That's fine. I appreciate that. Yeah, I'll give you my card if you want a copy of it. So, let's get started. Let's go talk to some strangers.
