All-in-one lens compromise

- I'm sure most photographers are familiar with the notion that a prime lens, a lens that only has a single fixed focal length, is going to give you the greatest sharpness. But it also doesn't give you very much flexibility to use a prime lens. The only way to zoom is to change lenses or to move closer to or further away from your subject. And so, a zoom lens to start with can be very convenient, but an all-in-one zoom lens, as a long range zoom lens is often referred to, provides you with even greater flexibility. For example, I've often used an 18 to 400 millimeter lens, which covers just about any scenario that I could imagine. It gives me a focal length for wide angle, middle distance, and telephoto all in a single lens. That offers some advantages, but there are also some compromises. To begin with, lenses that cover a tremendous range of focal lengths are typically not going to be the sharpest lenses available. They…
