Attaching an external microphone to the camera

- While your camera is great at capturing high quality visuals, audio is another matter. The small built-in microphone on your camera just really doesn't do a great job. So, if you want to get better audio, you're going to want to attach a microphone. Fortunately, your camera has a dedicated port to make this easier. For example, you can use something like a lavalier microphone. That's what I have here (microphone buzzes). This end can clip onto your subject, and it allows to record better dialogue. The other end is just a simple connection, looks a lot like a headphone connector, but you'll notice that there's a few extra rings on there. That's used to pass the extra information. You also may decide that you want to capture better audio from a distance. In this case, something like a shotgun mike works very well. This is designed to slip into your hotshoe.
