Autofocus basics

- One of the key benefits of a modern camera is its ability to autofocus. A sharp, in-focus picture is typically pretty important, and dealing with things like moving subjects and handheld cameras can make this quite challenging. Fortunately, your Nikon camera is a very effective tool at autofocusing. Now, in order for this to succeed, there's a handful of things you're going to look for on the camera. First up, you're going to need to swivel the camera and take a look at the controls here on the side. Many lenses will have a switch for manual focus and autofocus. You'll notice here that this one says MA and M. MA means that I can manually focus and autofocus, while the M mode is just for manual focus. Other lenses may have similar settings. For example, you'll notice here, the same sort of switch of manual focus versus autofocus, so it really just depends upon what you're doing.
