- As you gain more experience as a portrait photographer, you'll discover that there are certain common mistakes which are really easy to make and being aware of what those mistakes are is a good way to make sure that they don't happen to you. So here, I want to review a handful of mistakes that you want to make sure that you avoid. The first mistake that I see happen over and over again with my students is that their gear isn't ready and then when they meet the subject, they're fumbling with their gear, they're a little bit nervous, the subject gets nervous and it creates a downward spiral. So make sure that your gear is completely ready to go. What I mean by that is the things which I talked about previously but you also just want to take a test shot and look at it on the back of the camera. Make sure that everything is fired up and ready to go. The second common mistake is this, is that someone will show up late. It's really easy to do but what that can do is it can create this…
