Composing around things

- All righty, I've been here talking about all sorts of fancy, artsy compositional ideas, but let's face it, most people take pictures of things. Whether it's a snapshot or a fine art photograph, most of the photos we take are the result of seeing some actual object in the world, and whether you're taking a snapshot or a fine art image, you still need to compose. Now, no matter how impressive or important an object is, you have to make certain that it's the subject of your photograph and that it's well-supported by the other elements in your scene. That's what good composition is for. James Podrasky found this sad-looking dog, and right off the bat we confront the first complexity with shooting objects. Don't get me wrong, this is a very nicely composed image. The angle of the dog's head intersects with the angle of the wood to create a nice piece of geometric leading that takes us from the lower left corner into the dog and then right out the upper right side of the frame.
