- Color is an extremely important characteristic of light. The wrong colors of light in your picture, can make a person's portrait look muddy, or having mixed colors shining on their face can be a real mistake. And, when I talk about mixed colors, I don't mean like purple and green lights, I mean something like a little bit of a warm light and a blue light shining in from a window. I recommend having one color of light shining on your subject's face. That means, you need to be a little bit picky about where you make a picture. Often times when you photograph indoors, you're looking for a window to shine light on your subject and that's a great big soft light source. The thing is about the window, it's either got direct light shining in, maybe it's diffused with a curtain and making it a softer light, that's terrific. Or, it's a north-facing window with just the blue sky shining in on your subject and illuminating them with a big soft light. But that blue sky, is blue and if you have…
