- As photographers, of course we have to contend with exposure basically for every photo we capture and one of the components there is the aperture which many of us think of course as controlling depth of field which is one of the primary reasons we might adjust the aperture setting. But how do we figure how much depth of field we're actually going to end up with at a given aperture? This lens for example it's a 35 millimeter lens that opens up all the way to a very wide aperture of F1.8. That can give me very narrow depth of field. In addition, depth of field varies based on your distance to the subject. So I'm here in Madison Square Park in New York City. I found this interesting, okay not the most interesting subject I've ever photographed, but interesting. It got me thinking about how would I know depth of field? How would I know how many bars here would be in focus for example at different apertures? Well, at F1.8 of course I'm going to have very little depth of field, at F16…
