Depth of field transition

- It seems to me that many photographers think of depth of field as having very finite boundaries, and of course, that makes sense if you use, for example, a smartphone app to calculate depth of field, the app might tell you that the depth of field goes from, perhaps, three feet away from your lens all the way up to, let's say, 10 feet from the lens, and so, you have a seven foot range of depth of field, but there's a little tidbit of information that I think is helpful, it might seem obvious, but I think it's helpful to keep in mind, and that is that the boundaries as it were of depth of field have a bit of transition to them. So, depth of field, first of all, is the area of acceptable focus, but we don't just then transition immediately to being completely out of focus, there's some transition between the in focus areas and the out of focus areas.
