- Now let's try a different look. This is a shoot-through umbrella. If you notice, you're able to see my hand through the fabric. What this is going to do for us is as the light penetrates it, it's going to give a soft pleasing look all the way wrapped around for a different type of a look. Now this particular unit is a seven foot parabolic umbrella. It's kind of overkill for a shot like this so we're going to show you a little tip on how to use something this big in a studio environment. So, I'm going to open it up just a little bit and I'm going to attach it to the light source. There, now that we have it firmly in place, what we can do is slowly open it up just a little bit like this, or we can bring it back like so. Right about here is perfect. Now what we need to do is adjust the power. We'll take a couple of meter readings and then start shooting. Now let's take a couple readings.
