Dynamic range
- Dynamic range is the measure of the darkest to lightest tones that you can capture with your camera in a single exposure. Your eyes have a tremendous dynamic range, around 18 to 20 stops, while most cameras these days come in around 10 to 12 stops. Now, if you've ever tried to take a picture of someone in front of a bright window, you have encountered a difficult dynamic range situation. As you probably discovered, if you expose to preserve the bright background, the subject's face will be too dark. As the dynamic range of a camera increases, you can preserve more detail in the brightest highlights and darkest shadows of an image in a single shot. I say in a single shot because, of course, with Photoshop, you can shoot things in different ways and combine them. That's not what we're talking about when we're talking about dynamic range.
