- From the last chapter, you should know that the position of your light is critical to the lighting plan that you have in mind. But there's a lot more that you have to decide about your flash when you're setting it up. Fortunately, if you've ever walked in the woods at night with a flashlight, you already know a whole lot about flash exposure theory. Here's what I mean. When you're in a dark place and you shine a flashlight somewhere, you see a pool of light of a particular size. Your flash works the same way. It casts a pool of light of a particular size, and a bigger flash creates a bigger pool. Now that may sound obvious. The thing is, when you're using a flash, that pool of light comes and goes so quickly that you can't actually see it, and so it can be difficult to remember that there's a whole exposure situation going on because of this limited range that the flash has.
