- As you start to work out this plan of how you're going to go about all the steps you need to become a professional photographer, let's talk about how committed you are. It takes a huge commitment. This is not a fake it 'til you make it kind of business. With your very first client, you want the experience to be so outstanding that they're going to tell all their friends. Right off the bat there are no shortcuts. It's going to take a certain amount of time. Some of you may work faster than others but it's first, it's about building your skill set, and truly becoming a great artist. Then comes your marketing and business, customer service and all the other components. But there are no shortcuts. You can't put your camera on auto and just expect it to create outstanding images. You have to learn the skill set and understand the rules of photography so that you can break them later on.
