Handheld flash as backlight
- Every lighting setup has to have a key light. Many lighting setups need a fill light. Not every lighting setup is going to need a backlight. Backlight is very often the role that you can ignore, however, if you do the extra work, to work out a backlight, and you've got the space to position one, it can really make a difference in a shot. It can really be the thing that adds that extra bit of polish that really makes the shot work. So, as you'll know, I have my key light over here. It's casting a bunch of light that way bouncing off of this big fill card, so it's a nice diffused light. That's causing a shadow on that side of his face, so I've positioned a fill light over here, which is lightening up some of those shadows. I put a backlight over there. It's that light back there, it's almost directly opposite my key light. So what that's going to do is hopefully put a nice attractive rim of light just around the back of his head that's going to separate him from the background. Now I…
