- As mentioned in the last movie, these new smaller medium format cameras are not as expensive as larger digital medium formats, but they're still more expensive than a conventional SLR or mirrorless camera. Consequently, my assumption is that if you're curious about medium format, then you're probably a fairly experienced photographer. However this category of camera is new enough that photographers at many levels might be wondering what they're for. To be able to answer that question, there are some camera fundamentals that you must understand, fundamentals that a fairly experienced photographer will probably already know. So in the next chapter, we're going to discuss a few things that the more experienced shooter might be familiar with. For example, if you already feel comfortable with the difference between an SLR and mirrorless camera, if you already understand crop factors and the differences in depth of field that will ensue with a change in format size, then you might want to skip the next chapter and move on to chapter three. For the rest of you, chapter two will bring you up to speed on all of the technical concepts that you need to understand to be able to intelligently assess whether medium format is right for you.
