From the course: Improving Your Photography and Portraits with Lighting Modifiers

Introduction

- Hi, I'm Vanelli. I'm an educator, author, and a working sports and portrait photographer based on the east coast of Florida. Now as an educator, I specialize in creating an efficient and creative workflow. Now over the years, I've developed several cool and unique portrait tips that I would like to share with you so you can improve your portrait photography. Spoiler alert. It all begins with light modifiers. So in this course, we're going to talk about why we use light modifiers and what they are, the technical benefits behind them, and how we can use them for an artistic benefit when we're shooting. Next we'll move on to working with umbrellas, and we'll show how we could shoot through an umbrella to get soft light onto our subject, or we can bounce that light to get more of a harsher look. From there, we'll work on soft boxes. And we'll show you the different shapes and sizes of our soft boxes, and how we can modify them with grids and what soft boxes great for portrait photography. From there, we're going to work on some specialty lighting modifiers. We'll work on a beauty dish, reflectors. We'll talk about how to use black wrap or CineFoil to control light. From there, we'll touch base on flags, how to block light and how to put light in a direction that we want. At the end, we'll talk about gels to adjust our color temperature. We'll wrap up the session talking about speed lights and how these really, really small light sources can produce some amazing results. We've got some great things to learn today. Let's get started.
