Large sensors and dynamic range

- Dynamic range is the range of the darkest to lightest thing that you can capture in a single shot with your camera. We talk about dynamic range a lot here at The Practicing Photographer and in our various related courses, and it can be kind of an intimidating term. It's just a fancy way of saying something's way too bright in that frame. Your eye has a much broader dynamic range than any camera that you're ever going to shoot with, and that can create problems when you're shooting with a camera because you look at a scene and you see all this detail. You point a camera at it, and maybe all you see are really bright things and really shadowy things. One of the reasons that you choose one type of camera over another is the dynamic range that it offers, and in reviews you'll see people say, well this camera's fantastic.
