Lens controls and zoom functions

- Let's talk about a typical zoom lens and some of the controls you'll encounter. Then we'll talk a little bit about a prime lens. Lenses have many physical controls and how they work is going to vary. First up, with a zoom lens, you may have a lock button on the side here. This is designed to keep the lens from opening or closing. You see, as we adjust the zoom lens, it tends to telescope. And that's fine, but if you're packing this, you might want to switch that to the lock position. Now, with a zoom lens, you'll notice that they often have a window. This is where measurements can be seen, typically in feet and meters. Now, you might be thinking, "why do I need that? "I can autofocus!" Well, there are times that you can't autofocus. For example, I do a fair amount of astrophotography, and it's pretty hard to autofocus when you're focusing on a star, or a mountain really far away. Your autofocus system's going to fail.
