- There's a very good chance that it's been a very long time since you've used a handheld light meter. In fact, many photographers have never used a handheld light meter at all, and that's perfectly understandable because today's cameras include built-in metering that is rather sophisticated, with a variety of advanced options, but I still find that it can be helpful for photographers to make use of a light meter in a variety of different circumstances. And perhaps more importantly, using a light meter from time to time can actually help you practice exposure in general, give you a better overall understanding of exposure, and help you better anticipate special exposure situations, or what sort of settings you might use. And you actually probably already have a light meter available to you in the way of a smartphone.
