- All right, after you have found a location that you want to work with, the next thing to do, of course, is some location scouting. Now when you go and visit the location, you want to have your subject in mind. The subject for my shoot is Nikki. She's a creative director and an artist, and I want to think about how I can use this location to tell a bit of her story and create some good portraits of her. So the things you want to start to look for are, of course, texture, that's one of the reasons why portrait photographers like old buildings, because they have some texture or personality to them. You also want to be tuned in to the direction of light. Right now, the light is coming from over here and the building is blocking it. I'm standing in the shadow. So you want to think about working with the open shade or maybe some different types of light as well.
