Long exposure noise reduction

- It's often said that when you're using your camera's proprietary RAW capture format, the only camera settings that actually affect the exposure are the shutter speed, the lens aperture, and the ISO setting. But that's not entirely true. With many cameras there are additional options that will affect the original exposure. To be sure, things like saturation, contrast, and sharpening will affect a JPEG capture, but won't affect a RAW capture. But there are some other camera settings that will affect that RAW capture including long exposure noise reduction. As the name implies, long exposure noise reduction is noise reduction being applied to long exposures. With most cameras, that means exposures in excess of one second in duration. So it certainly seems like a good thing if we can reduce noise for long exposures, we would want to take advantage of that.
