- If you want to develop your own film and process your own prints in a darkroom you have to learn a lot of really mechanical skill. Accurate, dodging, and burning, and retouching. Those are things that take a lot of practice with your hands and special tools. Fortunately, as digital photographers, we don't have to mess with any of that. The computer just gives us instant craft skills, in that way. You want a little bit of dodging here? The computer just applies it for you and so on, and so forth. After 30 odd years, of using a computer with a mouse, I can tell you that the price you pay for that, sometimes is physical pain. It's difficult for me to decide what's worse, my hand, my elbow, or my shoulder. I've even, apparently, lost the ability to remember these body parts, they're so hard.
