Manual flash metering

- In manual mode your flash does no metering of its own. Instead, it fires at the power setting that you've specified using controls on the flash. Most automatic flashes can be put into manual mode and you buy flashes that are manual only. If you prefer working with manual flash, or if you're on a budget, an all manual flash is a great option and you can find good products for around a 100 bucks. In manual mode, full flash power is usually represented as one over one as you should know from your study of exposure theory. Every time you double or halve light, you alter that light by one stop. So if we dial the flash power down one stop, it will display one over two. Down another stop will get us to one over four and so on usually down to around one over 128. Some flashes offer third stop increments in between those whole stop divisions for more refined control. TTL flashes are engineered for specific camera systems.
