Panning with precision

- When it comes to photos with a long, or even slightly long exposure, precision can be important, and I'm talking specifically about when we're panning with a moving subject using a slightly slow shutter speed, so that the background can be blurred. Ideally though, we want our key subject to be sharp. The key is precision in panning. Here's one way to think about it. I have a balsa airplane here that I'm going to take pictures of with a panning motion. In this case, I'm very fortunate that my airplane is attached to a stick, and I can actually attach that stick to my lens. Now, if you imagine that we are photographing a moving subject, but it is literally attached to the camera, that gives you a sense of what we're able to accomplish, or at least what we're hoping to accomplish when it comes to panning. And so, I want to pan following my subject so precisely that it's as though, relative to my lens, the subject isn't even moving. Here, I did a little bit of a cheat by literally…
