Potential light compositions
- The human eye can see a tremendous range of light to dark, we call that dynamic range. Any camera that you use today can only capture a subset of that range. So while my eye can see this, my camera might only see this. Some people see that as a limitation and so they employ special practices to capture more dynamic range. That's how I made that first image. But more often your camera's lesser dynamic range is a huge advantage because it allows you to limit the tones in an image. And that creates a simpler composition. As we saw Foundations of Photography: Compositions, simplicity is critical for a well composed photo. In the last movie we saw how compelling light can serve as the starting point for a good composition. And while we saw some dramatic instances of lighting in the last movie, some of the shots we saw where actually built out of a recognition of the potential of the light in the scene.
