- Photography tends to involve a lot of accessories, and that seems to be especially true when a computer comes into the equation. For example, here I'm using a laptop, and, of course, I need to download photos to my external hard drives. But this laptop only has two USB ports. And here, I've got a primary photos drive, I've got a backup photos drive. I've got a card reader for my media cards. I've already got three devices that I want to plug in for only two USB ports. But fortunately, we can make use of a powered USB hub. This essentially, is sort of like the power strips you're probably already familiar with where you can plug it into an outlet, and then have, perhaps, six outlets available to you. Here I can plug this adapter, essentially, I'll take the USB here and plug it into the computer, and now I have, in this case, seven ports available. So I can plug in my additional hard drives.
