Previewing depth of field

- Sometimes when you shoot it's difficult to judge the depth of field. That's because your camera typically leaves the aperture of the lens mostly open to let in the most light possible when auto-focusing. As such, particularly if you're using a smaller aperture to extend the depth of field, it might be difficult to judge whether or not all of the shot is in focus. For example, when I look through the optical viewfinder here I see that the foreground globe is in focus, but the background globe looks out of focus. Even though I've set my aperture to F36, a really small opening that should keep a lot of things in focus. Well that's because there's a pretty big distance between the two objects, but if I want to preview that I can see it. So right now when I look at my camera settings, I see that at this small aperture and my ISO settings it's going to take about a 1.3 second exposure to get adequate light.
