- We've talked about how your flash casts a pool of light. Within that pool of light there is still the possibility of capturing ambient light as well as the flash light. And you have the ability to play with how much flash and how much ambient you want to gather. That gives you some control of shadows that we haven't really seen yet. If none of that makes any sense, don't worry, I'm going to confuse you even more by now trying to demonstrate it. What we've got here is we've got Zac, I'm going to take a portrait of him. And I have set up a single flash on a stand off to the side. This is going to be my key light, and it's the only light that I've set up. It's going to fill a good part of the room, though, so it's also going to serve to light up the background. I've put on this flash, a big umbrella. And this is serving as a diffuser on my light.
