Reflector as the front light
From the course: Portrait Photography: Ten Styles with One Light
Reflector as the front light
- When you're photographing outdoors, you can use the sun as your main light but from behind and reflect it back into your subject's face with a reflector. So you'll have this beautiful glint off their shoulders, and then you'll position the reflector in front of their face. Now remember you should use the white side of the reflector whenever possible in this case, so that's its very soft and gentle and it doesn't make your subject squint like the silver would. Now we can do the same sort of a setup in the studio or indoors using a flash for our main light. This will shine forward over your subject's shoulder, and then you can reflect it back into their face using a reflector. When you do it this way, it feels more like a rock and roll concert, the same kind of setup as you did outside, but it gives a completely different feel to the image.
