- As you're building your business, let's talk about the gear you're going to need to get the job done, to run your business. Most important of all, don't become a gear hound. Get the equipment that you need to get the job done and don't go nuts because you think you need some particularly expensive, exotic lens. Great equipment doesn't make great photographers. Great skill sets make great photographers. I'll bet you could find the same story from any photographer that's been in business for 10 years or more and they'll have a story for you about some exotic lens that they bought years ago and then barely used. They thought they needed it, they bought it, they tied up their cash flow and instead of renting it to try it out, they had to have it and the next thing you know, they sold it a few years later as used and probably at a loss.
