Rugged storage

- If like me your photography tends to take you out and about, into the field traveling a fair bit, then the storage that you bring along with you could be at a little bit greater risk than if you're just working in a studio environment, for example. And so, in that type of scenario, you might want to consider a hard drive that can actually handle the rigors of travel. And what I mean by that is essentially a rugged hard drive. Here, I have two hard drives that are very similar to each other. They're both of similar size, they're both bus-powered, so I don't need an extra power adapter to connect them to the computer. They both have four terabytes of storage capacity, and yet one, I feel comfortable traveling with, and the other always stays behind at home as a backup of this drive. And the difference is rugged certification. So this drive from LaCie, it's a LaCie rugged bus-powered hard drive, it is ruggedized, and it even includes a bumper, a rubber bumper around the exterior to give it that additional protection. And they say that it is certified for drops up to around about four feet. And that means a real drop, not just dropping it down onto a pillow, I have never bothered to test. I have never been comfortable testing one of my own drives to make sure that dropping it would still result in data I that could read. I'm going to take that on faith. But I do make a distinction between a drive that's really just appropriate for reliable storage, and also appropriate for reliable storage during travel when the drive is gonna get bounced around a bit more than if I were just home at the studio. So if your photography takes you out on the road, I would strongly recommend taking a look at the rugged options for hard drive storage.
