Couple years ago I was teaching a workshop of teenagers. We've been shooting for a while, and by this time it's kind of a free-for-all. We had a digital lab set up, and students were free to be editing or go out and shooting. And so I was just tending to whatever anyone needed. And kids were doing some editing, getting up and going out, and shooting more photos and whatnot, but there was one girl, a very talented photographer named Ashley Hale, and I watched her as she got frustrated with the editing that she was doing. She felt like she didn't have any images. She needed to go get more, and while everyone else was running out to go outside to shoot more stuff, I saw her pick up the water bottle that she was drinking out of and start to take a drink from it. But while she was drinking from the bottle she recognized that this play of light that comes through could make a really cool black and white picture.…
