Shutter types and flash sync

- All cameras have a shutter of course, but there are different types of shutters. Different mechanical mechanisms that make the shutter function. Most SLRs and mirror-less cameras have something called a focal-plane shutter. This is a pair of curtains that open and close in quick succession to expose the image sensor. The first curtain opens to expose the sensor and the second curtain closes to block off the sensor ending the exposure. At most typical shutter speeds, the second curtain begins to close almost immediately after the first curtain begins to open, meaning that the image sensor is actually exposed by a quickly moving slit. If you've seen my exposure course, then you've seen an actual video of this happening. Focal-plane shutters allow for extremely fast shutter speeds because the shutter doesn't have to get all the way open and closed. They can also be made to be fairly quiet and are usually pretty durable allowing for hundreds of thousands of actuations. The only downside…
