Silent shooting

- One of the things that makes a digital SLR an SLR is the fact that it uses a mirror mechanism and of course it also uses a shutter mechanism. Those are both physical devices, meaning that they actually have to physically move in order to take a picture and that results in a bit of noise. If I take a picture with a digital SLR, I'm going to hear the mirror moving the shutter opening and closing and that can sometimes be a bit of distraction. It can actually be a problem in certain shooting situations. With a mirrorless camera, as of course the name implies, there's no mirror so that automatically gets rid of one of those sources of potential noise. But we also have the option to shoot completely silently. Now with some digital SLRs, there are ways to minimize the amount of noise during the capture, so for example locking the mirror up initially before the capture.
