- In photography, of course it can be very helpful when our camera is on a stable platform. So, when we're capturing a long exposure, for example, we might use a tripod. And if we really want to be careful when we're using a tripod to make sure that we're not going to have any motion of the camera during the exposure. For example, if I were to touch the camera in order to press the shutter release button to take a picture, even that touch can move the camera around. And so for digital SLRs and mirrorless cameras, of course, you might be familiar with the notion of a cable release, a remote trigger that you can use to take a picture with your camera without actually touching the camera. What many photographers don't realize though, is a cable release is also an option for a smartphone.
