- Many photographers are intimidated by flash photography. In fact, very often when I hear photographers say that they prefer to shoot natural light photography, to me it seems like a euphemism for I am not comfortable using flash. And as a result, I find many photographers avoid studio photography, photographing indoors, portraiture for example, because they're concerned about having to use those flashes and get them set up properly. Well, one of the tricks that I think can be tremendously helpful as a first step into artificial light or studio photography is to use what are referred to as hot lights. In other words, not strobes or flashes, but rather lights that are always on. Those are exactly the types of lights that I'm using right now to illuminate this studio.
