- I'm here in this big, beautiful garden of roses, and I could tell you right now that we have built this shot this way because roses are the traditional symbol of love or hope or good breath, I don't know, whatever. I'm not going to tell you anything like that because I don't typically shoot photos that way. Through all of these Practicing Photographer episodes, and actually all of my other lynda.com courses, we've never really talked about a metaphorical layer to photography. It's always been pretty strictly literal and formal, and that's the way that I shoot. And I would argue that that's kind of really all photography can be used for if you're shooting in a naturalistic style the way that we have been. You can, of course, work to construct an image in the way that a classical Renaissance painter would have constructed an image.
