Three things you need to know about studios

- Before we can answer the question of how to build a studio it's best if we answer the question of what is a studio. And you may think, well I know what a studio is it's a big empty room where a photographers work. There's lights and there's chairs and plants, and things for people to sit in front of. That's true. But you're going to have an easier time solving the problem of how to build a studio if you think of a studio in very simple terms. A studio is any space where you can take control of the available lighting, add your own lighting, and take control of what the scene looks like within your camera frame. So, here I am in a full on professional studio. There is not a single light in here that I cannot turn on or off, I've got complete control of the light that's in this space. I have also got the ability to add lights. So I've got the ability to take the light that's in here out and put in my own lighting. I've also got the option to add whatever background I want. I can dress the floor. I can put things on the ceiling. I have complete control over this environment. This studio was built for that purpose. And so it's very easy to do those things and I've got a lot of flexibility when I do those things. But, if I pack the right gear I can do the same things in a conference room, or a hallway. Any place can be a studio if I remember those three things. Take control of the available lighting, add my own lighting or modify that available lighting. And then take control of the part of the scene that's going to be visible in my frame.
