- In some respects the very meaning of what is a camera has changed somewhat in photography. It used to be that a camera was a camera, a dedicated camera, in this case a digital SLR with interchangeable lenses, so that I can configure my camera in a variety of different ways, depending on the photographic subject that I was going to focus on. But now an increasing number of photographers are using a smartphone, either in addition to their other camera, or in many cases as their only camera. And to be sure, the quality of images that you can capture with a smartphone, is very impressive. In many cases, they will rival even the best dedicated cameras. But there's still a feature, a shortcoming of a smartphone that might cause you to need to use a real camera as it were from time to time.
