- When it comes to tripods for photography, it sometimes seems like there are an infinite number of options, all sorts of different tripods and different sizes with different features, a lot of decisions to be made to find the right tripod for you. But one of the key considerations you'll want to think about when choosing among different tripods is how the legs of the tripod actually lock. In general, there are two options, two basic varieties. First, we have the screw type locking mechanism where we can loosen up the screw so that we can extend or retract the leg and then turn that screw in order to tighten it up. The other option is a lever where we release a lever and then we can extend or retract the leg and putting that lever back locks the leg in position.
