Understanding and switching between metering modes

- In order to get a good exposure, you need to ensure accurate metering. Most of the time, your camera will get it right, but you can switch metering modes to help it out. The most common method is matrix metering. This produces natural results in most situations. Matrix metering divides your scene into a grid. It then meters each grid and averages those results to come up with the overall exposure setting. The camera considers the overall tonal distribution of the scene, as well as composition. And if you're using a newer lens, it may be able to analyze distance as a factor. The center-weighted option also measures the entire frame but gives greater emphasis to the center area of the frame. This is quite useful when shooting portraits, particularly if there's a strong backlight. The spot option looks at a small area, about a four-millimeter circle. This is about 1 1/2% of the frame, and it's really only useful if you want to be very specific on what's being used to set the exposure…
