(upbeat music) - For years, the digital camera market has been dominated by the 35 millimeter-size SLR. A few years ago, mirrorless cameras began to erode that dominance and now photographers have a fantastic array of choices built around both SLR and mirrorless technology. Those cameras all have sensors that are the size of either 35 millimeter film or APS C-size film, but there's another option for photographers who demand the absolute best in image quality, medium format. In the past, medium format cameras have delivered great quality and enormous price tags. Medium format sensors have been around since the earliest days of digital photography and digital medium format cameras have always been incredibly expensive. But now things have changed, there's a new category of digital medium format cameras that deliver superior image quality but that can be had for less than 10,000 dollars, that compared to the 20 to 75,000 dollar cost of other digital medium format systems, this is a big breakthrough. With medium format you can get higher pixel counts, better detail and more dynamic range than what you'll find in a typical SLR or mirrorless camera but how much better? Though substantially cheaper than previous medium format cameras, these new cameras are still quite a bit more expensive than high end SLR and mirrorless cameras. Are they worth it? What are they for? Who needs one and what can you expect to achieve if you buy one? And how do they fare against higher and medium formats? In this course we're going to address those questions and many others as we explore what is effectively a new class of digital camera, affordable medium format. We'll talk to professional photographers who use these cameras and explore what you stand to gain from buying one, as well as how these cameras compare to what you might already have.
