What makes a good subject

- One of the things that I still find really weird about photography is that, very often, I have no interest in the subject of the photo that I'm taking. Now, I know that sounds callous somehow. Photography is an art form after all. I'm supposed to be expressing something. How can I have no interest in what I'm expressing? As I discussed in Foundations of Photography: Composition, the point of composition is to ensure that the viewer of your image knows what your subject is. You might have the most fascinating subject in the world, but if you don't compose your photo well, you're going to have a lesser image. Sometimes a good subject is obvious. An interesting face, a beautiful landscape, a captivating play of light. Your composition needs to support those things and lead the viewer to them. But, as we've been discussing, your brain has an inherent sense of composition. You can derive satisfaction from an image for no other reason than good composition. That means that, sometimes, the…
