What is tone?

- I know you probably want to get to shooting, but your entire study of photography from here on is going to be easier if we get a few quick definitions out of the way. So that's what we're going to do in these next couple of movies. Please don't gloss over these terms. They're going to come up in just about every discussion you will ever have about exposure, post-production, and even composition. Tone is a word that photographers use a lot, and all it means is brightness. Here are two gray swatches. The one on the right is a lighter tone than the one on the left. Tone is pretty easy to understand when talking about shades of gray, but it's important to recognize that colors have tone as well. Here are two red swatches. This time, the one on the left has a lighter tone than the one on the right. Now, you may think, why don't you just say, the one on the left is brighter? Well, you can, but tone is a powerful word because it makes the idea of brightness into a noun. As photographers…
